A domain lock controls transfers, not every change

A registrar lock, often called a transfer lock, can prevent a domain from being moved to another registrar until the lock is removed through the registrar’s process. It is a useful control, but it does not secure your email inbox, Shopify admin, DNS provider, registrar password, or every DNS modification.

Treat the lock as one safeguard in a domain-access program, not a status badge that makes the domain safe on its own.

Put the process around the setting

1. Confirm who owns the registrar account and its recovery email.
2. Require unique credentials and multi-factor authentication for the registrar and recovery inbox.
3. Enable the available transfer protection after confirming how it affects a planned migration or domain sale.
4. Record who may request an unlock and how the request is verified.
5. Review lock status after registrar changes, account-recovery events, and planned transfers.

Do not leave a domain unlocked longer than necessary for an approved change. If a transfer is planned, coordinate the registrar, DNS, Shopify, and email work so customer routing remains correct.

What to do if lock status changes unexpectedly

Preserve the notification, check the registrar account from a trusted device, and contact the provider using its official support or security channel. Also review recent access and recovery changes. An unexpected lock change is a signal to investigate; it does not identify the cause by itself.
